Ricoh Caplio RR30

The Ricoh Caplio RR30

A Holiday Review

This is a review of the Ricoh Caplio RR30 as used by me (Martin Kessel) on my recent holiday to the South of France
10 Days at La Combe Du Pech - www.lacombedupech.co.uk

This review is a pictorial representation of what I find best about this camera. It was a standard camera... no firmware updates, no special add-ons, just the camera, some NiMh batteries and a holiday in France.

My initial reaction on holding the Ricoh RR30 was that it was a bit light. I was used to something a lot heavier -I normally use a Ricoh RDC I-500, but I was soon to find that the camera was not short on quality. I had done some tests with the camera prior to my holiday (see www.g4wjx.freeserve.co.uk/Ricoh/rr30.htm ) but I had for some time planned that I would use my time in France to give the camera a good testing.
The camera has 3m pixels and is USB only with 8mb of onboard memory and a slot for SD and MM cards (up to 256mb SD and 64mb mm with the original firmware version). I was very used to 3m pixel cameras and found that the it produced bright, colourful images that print very well up to A4 and beyond. I looked at the various modes that this camera had to offer, but found that I really only used it either for macro or landscape work. It can take multiple shots and fit them into one picture, but this is well documented on reviews elsewhere (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ricohtalk/) and I found that my type of photography had no use for this mode. You can find the full spec for the camera and pictures of what it is like here www.ricoh.co.jp/r_dc/dc/products/rr30/index.html

I have decided to put a large number of shots online, with small thumbnail pictures linking to the full (600k) unedited pictures. This way, you can see what the camera can do and make up your own mind. I will put notes by the pictures and will rotate the portrait thumbnails for easy viewing. If you need to ask me about any of the pictures, I have put contact info and some final comments on the last page.

Happy viewing!
