The Chairmans charity is fundraising this year in aid of Sue Ryder Care Hospice, which is located in
26 acres of gardens, in the former home of the Fleming family, on the edge of the village of Nettlebed, near Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. Founded by the late Lady Ryder as a hospice in 1979, at the request of local consultants in oncology, it has developed into a specialist palliative care centre for in patients and day patients. The medical team is led by a consultant in palliative medicine and patients are accepted from a wide area in the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

Our Philosophy of Care
Palliative care is the active total care of those with progressive, far advanced, life limiting disease.

The staff and volunteers of the Sue Ryder Care Centre, Nettlebed, give care through in patient, Day Care and community services to adult patients, their families and carers.
All patients associated with the Care Centre will be recognised and treated as individuals. Careful consideration will be given to the patient’s independence, self worth, dignity, comfort and peace of mind, to enhance their quality of life and affirm the life already lived. Care is also extended to the patient’s family and key helpers, both during the active phase of illness and in bereavement.
Everyone associated with giving care will be expected to nurture a loving, caring and secure environment, seeking always to fulfill the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient, irrespective of their race, creed, social or financial status.
All staff and volunteers are recognised as having a valuable contribution to make towards the care of patients and their families and are encouraged to work together. Mutual respect and care within the team enhances patient care.

About us
We provide for the active total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain, of other symptoms and of psychological, social and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best possible quality of life for patients and their families.
Our facilities comprise two four bedded, one three bedded, two double and seven single rooms. All are former bedrooms of the house and have the proportions and style associated with an Edwardian country house. Most have en suite bathrooms with bath or shower. Television is provided to all beds. A patients’ lounge and a smoking room, both with television and access to a balcony with garden furniture, overlook the gardens.
The Day Care Centre is situated in two of the former public rooms of the house. It is open on Wednesday and Thursday from 10.00am to 3.30pm and offers a range of services for adults of all ages who have a progressive, life threatening illness. It offers:
- a break for patients and their carers
- nursing care
- advice on pain and symptom management
- information and help with benefits
- access to physiotherapy
- individual and group activities
- complementary therapies
- local outings
- access to the family support sister
- home cooked meals

It is also possible for patients to attend Out Patient Clinics to see a Doctor or Nurse for medical and/or therapeutic treatments.
