On their first meeting, Allen (Hugo Weaving) and Rose (Cate Blanchett) engage in sexually-tense Bogart-Bacall banter.
However, unknown to him, everything Rose says is the truth: ironically, everything she admits to is true, and in time, the power that she will appear to bring Allen will destroy everything about him which he once held to be true.

Do I pay for this by the half hour, or what?

Allen : Is there an ulterior motive?
Rose : There always is.
Allen : So what is it?
Rose : That wouldn't be keeping it secret, would it?
Allen : No, but it would clarify things.
Rose : No it wouldn't.
Allen : Tell me you're working for the CIA.
Rose : All right, I am.
Allen : And your mission is to terminate me.
Rose : Yes. How long will it be before you frighten yourself?
Allen : Make a suggestion.
Rose : That I'll destroy your soul.
Allen : It sounds more interesting every minute.
Rose : You're such an innocent.
Allen : Do I pay for this by the half hour, or what?
