Tensions mount: Rose (Cate Blanchett) seduces Allen (Hugo Weaving), who is beginning to lose faith in his own life as his relationship and political purity crumble around him.

I'm not in despair…

Rose : Nothing will ever change in this country.
Allen : You like the way things are, do you? The madness?
Rose : The madness is inside you.
Allen : So it's all an illusion.
Rose : Other people live.
Allen : How?
Rose : Day by day.
Allen : And nothing changes.
Rose : You get older.
Allen : Is that your only ambition?
Rose : It's not an ambition at all. It's a fact.
Allen : A fact that negates everything else.
Rose : No. Death does that.
Allen : So death is the only reality.
Rose : You don't understand me, do you?
Allen : I know there's something you want.
Rose : No, it's what you want. I don't want anything.
Allen : Why not?
Rose : Because I've had it all. Power, hunger, fear, desire.
Allen : You don't seem any the worse the wear for it.
Rose : It affects different people in different ways. How will it affect you?
Allen : Do you think that's what I'm after?
Rose : Yes.
[voice over effect from a previous scene: Allen shouting "No!"]
[spotlight/sound effect of Allen's father from previous scene: "You're my eldest son" ]
Rose : You can't even control your emotions.
Allen : What makes you say that?
Rose : You're married and you're falling in love with me.
Allen : What do you want me to do?
Rose : It's not too late to run away.
Allen : Is this the contemporary version of The Dance of Death?
Rose : No rationalisations, you're too good at that.
Allen : You want to take away my only defence?
Rose : Of course. It's not a very good defence anyway.
Allen : Against what?
Rose : The despair you feel.
Allen : I'm not in despair.
Rose : Aren't you? I would be if I were you.
Allen : Why?
Rose : Because you'll never get what you want.
Allen : No one ever does.
Rose : That's remarkably mature of you.
Allen : It doesn't stop you from fighting for it.
Rose : You've got a tragic view of life.
Allen : What do you want?
Rose : I want to know which one of us is real.
Allen : What are the positions?
Rose : Any positions you like.
Allen : All for the adrenalin.
Rose : Not all of it.
Allen : I want you.
Rose : Everything you do is about control.
Allen : I need to know.
Rose : Look for once at the chaos.
Allen : Who are you?
Rose : Feel me!
[All effects stop. A spot comes up on Allen and Rose violently fucking; Allen comes, screaming. Blackout]
