~ The Blind Giant is Dancing

(3 of 5)
Hugo Weaving, 1998 Interview shot

As his power increases, Allen (Hugo Weaving) is ready to play the games he once hated so much in other politicians: he thinks he's found a way to put arch rival Michael Wells away for good.
But Rose (Cate Blanchett) is ready to shoot him down in flames and hit him with some truths of her own...

What's burnt your soul?

Allen : Someone wanted to set him up? Who?
Rose : The most likely candidate is obviously you.
Allen : Me! You don't think--
Rose : Come off it, Allen. Your running battles with one another have provided half the political coverage for the last twelve months.
[Slight pause]
Allen : Is that why you've been sleeping with me?
Rose : I haven't been sleeping with you. We've been fucking.
[a metal shearing noise]
Allen : Have you been able to find out anything useful?
Rose : Don't play the innocent, Allen: you're prepared to use power that way.
Allen : What power?
Rose : Do you expect me to believe you didn't intend to use me? [my edit] Why are you so convinced of Wells' guilt?
Allen : I never intended to use you and I haven't.
Rose : So you love me!
Allen : Yes!
Rose : [distressed] No! I don't want your love!
Allen : Why did you come to me that day?
Rose : Say it; say I love you.
[pause. Rose bursts into tears. A slight pause]
I'm glad of everything that's happened.
[a slight pause]
Allen : What is it between us?
Rose : You know. And that's exactly what I want.
Allen : I want to be able to love you.
Rose : Then why do you whisper 'cunt' to me? Why do you scratch your fingers along my scars? Why the hate in your eyes as I come?
Allen : What's burnt your soul?
Rose : The same thing that's burnt yours. All that exists is power.
Allen : Love exists! We could love!
Rose : So you love me, you want me, you don't feel real without me and so you fuck me and feel the horror in your heart and you fuck me harder because you love that guilt and pain because they're the only things you can feel--
Allen : What's left of your feeling? To be with a man you hate so you can act out a fantasy of power?
Rose : Show me I'm wrong, Allen. Show me you're more than a petty power monger trying to escape himself.
Allen : I don't need you.
Rose : But you want me. I know you, Allen. I know the circles of your hate.
Allen : All you know is yourself.
Rose : I want to be touched just once with affection.
Allen : You won't let me touch you!
Rose : Why didn't you tell your wife you loved me? What's love that's ashamed of itself?
Allen : My wife's got nothing to do with it.
Rose : This world is perfect. There's nothing I want to change.
Allen : Listen to me! I love you.
Rose : Liar.
[The lights change] [My edit to their next scene]

[The institute. Afternoon. Allen is on the phone. Rose stands at a distance, watching him. Allen hangs up and sees Rose. Pause]
Rose : Nothing hurts you.
Allen : You haven't tried hard enough yet.
[She begins to take off her blouse]
Rose : Do you want me to try harder?
Allen : If it makes you feel real.
Rose : I love you.
