Hugo Weaving: The Matrix: The Matrix Revisited: Plot/Comments:

The Matrix Revisited is more than just an in-depth proper 'making of' timed to coincide with the advance-advance hype of making the new movies and an excuse to re-re-release yet another DVD package (3 goes to get it nearly right: still no audio track, no trailers, no alt/deleted scenes, no bloopers).
Hugo Weaving, The Matrix, Agent Smith, three agents
With much of the cast input filmed during the 2000 filming of Reloaded/Revolutions (see main pic above) , Revisited is also an excellent  retrospective documentary on the phenomenon of The Matrix
Weaving  gives some glimpses of how things change in the next films: "(Smith) doesn't like feeling emotions and he doesn't like feeling weak. To all intents and purposes he is partly human, partly real... (he) starts to develop some very human qualities and that ultimately brings him down"
It is at its best when showing the immense scale of the production design and sharing the sheer drudgery and pain of making the film: the numerous injuries and hospitalisations (though less than the sequels); bored agents tapdancing in the wet interrogation room; Hugo Weaving in pointy-finger gun poses; freezing in a cold Sydney factory for the subway scene; the martial arts training sessions (Yuen Wo Ping: "Hugo is very powerful, like a machine" ); and the wire work: "when you're in a harness for a long time it begins to ride up and eventually I could feel it squeezing my kidneys"

Hugo Weaving Easter Eggs:

The DVD of Revisited comes with several Easter Eggs (hidden bonuses)), one of which is a 2min slot solely devoted to Hugo's early (2 days into training) leg injury/oedema operation. Find menu screen with Morpheus in crowd. Click sideways until Smith appears in the crowd (f the Red Dress woman appears, click sideways again). Press Enter.
This has some great footage of him returning to the training area after the operation:

  • taking a certain amount of childlike delight in smilingly grossing out other cast members (particularly Fishburne and a concerned Carrie-Anne Moss) with details of his local anaesthesia operation: "so I'm looking down at this thing and they're lifting it up and I'm going 'that's not my leg' "
  • a  pale and bearded Keanu Reeves  ('The Neck') hugging a tanned and stubbled Hugo Weaving ('The Hip') and comparing notes.

Hugo Weaving: The Making of The Matrix

This is a pretty straight  docu with the added bonus of video footage from the martial arts training (more of which also turns up on Revisited).
It spends a lot of time on the Kung Fu and gun training sessions for the film (4 months on/off between  October 97-March 98): Keanu Reeves says how they would spend ages stretching out "opening the rusty gates" and watching Kung Fu movies.
As a proper 'making of' it's pretty useless for something as huge as The Matrix, but it's another nice little addition to the  masses of mini-features which litter the two disc set.

Typical Hugo Weaving Quotes:

  • "It's kind of chased away a few demons for me and, um, it's educated me a little bit more"
  • I got kicked in the ribs, both my ribs were cracked...(when blocking a punch with a punch, which the Wachowskis say went 'crack/snap') I thought I'd broken my wrist one day and it blew up"
  • "I found taking the hits more difficult than giving them...between that hit and that hit I want to get another one in"
  • On the same wet wall scene: "It was more of a brutal, western style of fighting. It was a dirty, dirty fight" (laughs)

A Few Hugo Weaving Highlights:

  • When asked what his reaction to watching the finished Matrix was, Weaving modestly told how he was impressed with Moss' introduction scene and how good she was
  • Laurence Fishburne, frustrated at not having any dialogue with Weaving during their interrogation scene but relishing the fact that he had the opportunity: "part of me was sad that I didn't have any dialogue so I could say 'I had this scene with Hugo Weaving and it was great'… well, I did do this scene with Hugo Weaving and it was great".
