The Town Name:

Mireya Rose Cachero

Occupation:

Owner of the 'Last Chance' Saloon in Little Bedrock

Gender:

Female

Marital Status:

Single

Age:

26

Physical Description:

Mireya is approximately 5'4” inches in height and around 135 pounds. She is a curvaceous woman, with a well-endowed bosom and shapely hips; however, this womanly figure belies her strength at times. While not muscle bound or able to compete with a man, years of working out of doors and riding have kept the rest of her trim and strong.

Her thick jet-black cascades in curl falls down below her shoulder blades, but for practical purposes she wears it up when she works. Her eyes are large and coal black set within her smooth, light brown skin that reveals her mixed background of Navajo and Mexican.

Family:

Edrigo Chachero, like many young and optimistic men, was called to California by the Gold Rush of 1849. Leaving his home in Mexico , he traveled north. While Edrigo was a hard worker and had a few fortunate incidents during his mining experience, he never made it as big as he'd hoped. Taking what he had earned, he headed back toward Mexico , thinking he would at least improve his family fortunes and his own by the wealth he'd earned.

During the trip back, he was struck down by illness. It was only good fortune that delivered him into the hands of a peaceful Navajo tribe. They took him in and nurtured him back to health. It was during this time that he met his wife Altsoba—meaning “all war”. She was a fierce woman, but beautiful and Edrigo was fast in love by the time he was completely healed and ready to leave.

Altsoba was also pregnant by that time.

Mireya Rose Cachero was born nine months later. Although Edrigo left his wife and unborn child behind, Altsoba honored his side of the family by giving the little girl the name of Edrigo's mother. Nascha (meaning owl was given to her for her large eyes) Leaphorn is her Navajo born name, a name she keeps secret from nearly everyone due to superstition.

Her father married a woman in Mexico and so she has several step siblings, none of which she is too fond of. They were all quite lazy in her opinion. Her father is dead and her mother is still alive.

Place of Birth:

Near what is now Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Background:

Mireya lived among her mother's people for many years: learning how to weave, cook, to track and many of the other skills her tribe would teach her. She was a hard worker even then and not one given to much complaining. Many of the young men of the tribe sought her knowing she would make a fine wife… yet Mireya wished to know more of the world and especially of her father.

When she was a little over twenty and well past the age when anyone would still desire her for a bride, she stole a horse and headed south. It was her intention to return the horse with interest once she had discovered her father—whom she dreamed was a rich man living well off his gold by now.

It took two years before she finally found what remained of the Cachero family. Her father had returned to Mexico , married, and had children with another woman, but had never forgotten about Mireya's mother. It drove his wife crazy and she vowed to make her husband's life miserable. Edrigo in turn, drowned the mistakes of his life in alcohol. When Mireya came to him, he was a changed man—full of hope and life. For a awhile the wife was tolerant of Mireya as she stayed out of her way, but eventually, believing she would lose the last of the Cachero's fortune, she took matters into her own hands and attempted to kill Mireya. Edrigo intervened and it was he who died instead.

Fleeing the homestead, Mireya knew she was in big trouble. She had some of her father's things and the last thing the wife called out after her was an accusation that she had killed her own father.

Taking he horse, she made it up into the hills where she had the increased misfortune to stumble upon a group of bandits. Mireya was horrified to think what they might do to her and fought with everything she had, managing to knock one out with the barrel of a shotgun before she was captured. To her surprise, and relief, the leader of the men, Chato Sanchez, was not villainous to women and was able to keep his men in line, protecting her from a horrible fate. Yet, he did not let her go immediately and so she stayed, cooking and watching after things, all the while moving herself up in the ranks and into Chato's heart.

The two became lovers by choice and like an old western day Bonnie and Clyde , joined forces, moving north to begin raiding the new towns that were springing up all over the Southwest.

For many years, they enjoyed each other and untold wealth. She also earned the respect of most of Chato's men. Looking after them almost like a younger sister, cooking, and caring for the wounded. Very few of them looked upon her as a threat.

But it was not meant to last. After a particular terrifying incident, Mireya took her share of the loot and along with Chato's blessing headed even further north into America . Stopping in Little Bedrock, she spied a saloon and bought it, hoping to make a legitimate life while she waited for Chato to find her.

Professional History:

Mireya has been a bandit for most of her adult life. While she never partipated in the actual hold ups, she would ride with the gang and watch the horses, much like a wheel man in today's mob. However, given her skills and looking after the "gang", she can pass herself off as a cook and even has a few medical skills via her Navajo heritage.

Personality:

Because of her past and present profession, Mireya is somewhat of a chameleon. She can be flirtatious and charming, but a part of her stays back and hidden, watching both herself and her audience for the desired reaction. There is no doubt she likes to talk, although some have realized that she listens more than she speaks, a skill she hopes will overcome any prejudices that being a woman of mixed heritage will bring as the owner of a saloon deep in the heart of cowboy country.

Mireya is as feisty as her heritage implies. She is passionate and strong willed, not wishing to rely on anyone for anything—although in this world that cannot always be helped. Her temper is legendary (at least with those who know her), although it takes a lot to send her completely out of control; she is not above throwing a thing or two to get her point across.

It takes time for someone to truly get to know her. Trust is not given easily or quickly, yet when that trust is given, it is for life unless she is betrayed. That said, revenge is not something she would shy away from.

Style, Likes and Dislikes:

Mireya is usually dressed when doing the hard work in a long dark skirt and colorful shirt, but nothing too fancy. She is also not above wearing pants. When tending bar, she will clean up and put on one or two saloon girl dresses that show off her assets. She enjoys doing this and likes all the pretty things that come with it, plus the attention, but she is practical enough to know that life cannot be lived that way--at least by her. Sometimes she dreams of being a rich, fine lady with servants to tend to her every need, but that is usually interrupted by a task that needs to be taken care of.

She enjoys horseback riding and will engage in it every chance possible. She also continues target practice. One never knows when you will be required to shoot first and ask questions later. Since the Sheriff requires all guns be turned into his office, hers are well hidden in her personal quarters above the bar along with her gold and share of stolen loot.

She loves her horse, the one she stole several years ago. They are deeply bonded.

Mireya also has two pieces of jewelry that are sacred to her, one from her father and one from Chato.

Skills, Talents and Interests:

Mireya is skilled with a shotgun and pistol and an excellent rider of horses—a throwback to a previous life. She is also a good cook of her native dishes, an excellent barterer and conversationalist, and skilled gambler. She has lived nearly all her life in a man's world, and can show off with the best of them, throwing back drink after drink and putting most men under the table. She has marginal wilderness tracking skills.
