Chaukad

Chaukad consists of four countries and six independent cities. The Chaukads appeared from over the mountains to the north many centuries ago, through the Paich Pass, and settled around Lake Chaukad. They are a stocky, blonde haired race with very pale skin and blue or grey eyes. They tend to keep themselves to themselves and are known to trade through the mountain passes to the north in the summer. The common language is Chaukada.

The Chaukads do not have a religion as such, but a set of 'life-style philosophies.' Every individual belongs to a caste, at the bottom of the hierarchy the ruler, the potentate, above him, the monks who guide the people, higher up the merchants, then craftsmen, and the farmers.

Lake Chaukad is about three hundred miles across, and is connected to the Inner Sea by the River Heuchim, after dropping several hundred feet at Ijchaits Falls. It is surrounded on most sides by mountains, only to the east and south is the land particularly fertile. But the land is rich in iron and certain other metals.

The Chaukad countries consist of:

Wodam

Language: Chaukada.

Cities: Ijchaits, Duft, Meifat.

The most powerful of the nations, as it connects with the rest of the world, and the biggest too. It is home to a monastery, where the disciples of the philosophies are taught, providing the elite warriors for the nation. In the south east stands the ruins of a temple to Tjanri, goddess of the moon, destroyed when the Chaukads took the land. As well as the greatest agricultural output of the Chaukad nations it is also well known for its sculptures. Ijchaits is a city divided into two. Lower Ijchaits, at the foot of the falls, is where Chaukad meets the outside world, a cosmopolitan city of trade, where all travellers must stop, before gaining permission to climb the steep ascent into Upper Ijchaits. An ambitious scheme is afoot to make a water powered lifting device, able to carry whole boats up and down the falls.

Ijle

Language: Chaukada.

Cities: Esakeift, Aift, Loesuin, Iljaf.

The Schielneu Pass allows access in the summer through the mountains to lands in the far west. Aift was home to Ejalia the seeress. Ijle is a windy place, and at many times of the year feels extremely cold as it blows down the pass.

Jaich

Language: Chaukada.

Cities: Suilsjei, Houft, Puift, Njadsoud.

Access to the old country of the Chaukads is through Paich Pass, open in the summer only. The greatest observatory in the world is in Suilsjei, where the clear winter nights can give magnificent views of the heavens.

Chjeg

Language: Chaukada.

Cities: Cheiftmuis.

Smallest of the nations, with little fertile land to speak of, it owes its wealth to the gold mines Many other metals are found in the mountains at the back of Chjeg, albeit in small amounts. Beyond Cheiftmuis, heading east into the mountains, is the legendary palace of Lathus, home of the minotaur.

Independent Cities

Language: Chaukada.

Cities: Ijshfoel, Euddi, Agwoersa, Feului, Changol, Heith.

These cities all stand on the lake, surrounded by a minimal amount of farm lands. They are all large fishing harbours.
