This is the oldest surviving civilization, the remnants of the Kallazin, though it has gradually changed in both form and location over the millenia. The GRN is composed of a number of autonomous city-states arrayed along the Great River, and its branches, the Great White River and the Great Blue River. The river cuts through the desert and provides water for all their crops, as well as their communications. It is their life blood. Each city is ruled by a council of Elders, each of whom is elected to his or her position. Anyone can stand to be a councillor, as long as he is over thirty-five, a position is available and he is a native of the city and of good standing.
The GRN exports many agricultural goods, especially grain. Other important products are cheese (many cities have their own distinct variety), and glassware. The major route for trade is by river and sea, but the mouth of the river is controlled by Schatan and they extort hefty tolls. Other routes take goods over land from Akhlang to Scheikie, Kalakh to Leed, and Veedlethen to Kaimoc. The GRN has no access to metal deposits within its borders, so these must be imported.
The River People worship Geos, their earth-mother, a great spirit that they believe lives throughout the world within all living things. They believe she has eight aspects, which are in themselves almost distinct deities. The River People tend to be quite tall and well-built; with dark hair and eyes and of swarthy complexion. Riverspeech has become the name for their language, though they call it Kallazar.
The notable cities are:
Passing down the Great White River: Leedakh, Roothoks, Ofelom, Efrathoog, Thanet, Thoong (known for its Temple of the Moon).
Down the Great Blue River: Psoend, Lanki, Penlong, Genood, Ramgeth, Geengroo (with a notable school for herbalists) and Embksen.
After the river converge: Veematand (at the confluence), Penalanks, Akhlang.
Passing down the River Andksa (which is the Jaitum in the Keit lands): Eemkso, Onksrop, Khoom (famous for its horses), Gelandree, Gaddakh, Zoozot, Kalakh, Veedlethen.
