[Sara Joel]

About the author

My name is Sara Joel, and I live in Preston in the north of England. After doing a degree in English Literature at the University of Durham, I became a primary school teacher, and taught children between the ages of four and seven for about five years in various schools in Greater Manchester and Lancashire. I married Andy in 1994, and last year (1998) our son, Richard, was born.

Role-Playing

I began role-playing many moons ago, using the old D&D basic rules. As there were usually only the two of us playing (me and my friend, Julian), it meant that I either DMed or played a whole party of characters. Still, we enjoyed it, and eventually progressed onto AD&D (the first edition). When I went to university, I joined the Games Society, and was introduced to other systems like Rolemaster, Paranoia and Cthulu. I also became a member of Durham University Treasure Trap, a live action role-playing society, where I met my husband, Andy, who was then its president. A few years after leaving university, Andy and I invited a few friends for an "Adventure Weekend", which has since become a regular event. Withnada was my character in the first campaign.

Football

My other great interest is football (or soccer, if you prefer.) I have been a season-ticket holder at Manchester United for some 15 years - yes, since before they were successful. And, before some clever spark asks why I don't support Preston North End, I actually do come from Manchester. Having said that, I do appreciate that I have been extremely lucky to follow the reds through the nineties. Many people I know have had it a lot worse. My sister-in-law supports Watford, and my best friend is a Manchester City fan - now there's someone who knows all about suffering!

[Champions]

2/6/99 UPDATE: Well, since writing the above United have gone onto even greater things and done the treble. And I was actually in the Nou Camp to see the most amazing game of football ever. Things like that just don't happen in real life! Mind you, City and Watford haven't done bad for themselves either. Watford in the Premiership. It's a strange old world...
