The County was well-represented by four shooters. We worked in groups to address aspects of the online survey, conducted in Dec/Jan. (See NSRA website) When completed, findings from workshops will be reported.
The region had its best set of results since the champs began some five years ago. We finished first in men's pistol, rifle, and women's rifle. Individual medals were won by Mary Taylor for first place in rifle, whilst Martyn Buttery and Trevor Smith got second places in rifle and pistol respectively.
A team of 17 gave three pairs in each of men's pistol and rifle and one team each in women's pistol and rifle. All teams acquitted themselves well against opposition from the Isle of Man, Jersey, the North East, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

Alex Carson, Brian Girling, Mary Taylor, and Trevor Haynes, were amongst the team which ran the successful shooting event. There were over 300 competitors in 11 details. The West Midlands fielded over 20 competitors, some of whom had trained with the squad.
Next event Regional Tetrathlon, 5 Jan 08, Warwick University.
This was the second time the Squad has run an open shoot. It was decided to keep it a one day event and to retain finals. New for this year was the addition of the two ISSF 10m 'rapid' pistol events, five shot, and five target, and a 'Pony Club Tetrathlon' match. These were all shot shot on the new 25m range. The decision to offer one or two 60-shot matches proved popular, most competitors electing to shoot one.
Pistol shooting attracted the biggest entry, which included nine juniors. Bryan Clarke (Ipswich) won the open championship moving into first place in the final. Junior, Glen Eldershaw is regional and junior champion. Regional women's and youth championships were won by pentathletes Rachael Hares and Courtney Hyde, respectively. Bryan also won the five-shot event, with fellow Eastern Region shooter Andy Graver (Norwich) winning the five-target match. Peter Young (Heart of England PC) won the 'tetrathlon' match.
The rifle open and regional champion was Richard Davies (NISC) in his first 'open', followed by local junior Mary Taylor (NISC). Unfortunately there were not enough entries from women or juniors to make separate competitions. For full results click here
All-in-all the event went well, there were some good performances, plenty of volunteers, and few problems. Hopefully it achieved its goal of promoting the Squad in the Region and maybe spurring others to form or re-form theirs.

Pistol final 1-8: Andy Graver Bryan Clarke Glen Eldershaw Mark Gerrard Trevor smith Andy Faulkner Abigail Vernon |
11 Aug, 1 Sep, 29 Sep, 24 Nov, 15 Dec.
We entered teams (of 2) in all four categories and had reserve shooters in most, thanks to members of Rugeley RPC. Our pairs came second in every event. Individually scores gave 1st place to Glen Eldershaw (pistol) 2nd to Andy Charnell (rifle) and 3rd to Laura Timmins (rifle). In women's pistol Karen Morris (shooting for Wales), Rachel Poole, and Courtney Hyde (Pentathletes)came 3rd,4th, and 5th respectively. The latter two gave very credible performances for young shooters.
For the Inter Regional Standard Pistol Match the team, selection was 'Hobson's choice'. Unfortunately only five WM shooters entered, one withdrew, one did not shoot Standard Pistol which left the minimum of three: Brian Girling, Ben Wright and Trevor Haynes, not as strong enough team to beat the Eastern Region.
Individually, Trevor won the Open Sport Pistol match (581) and came 3rd in 50m pistol after qualifying 5th in the final.

We are running one-day workshops at NISC and Wedgnock, for 10m and 50m precision pistol and rifle shooting and 10m and 25m 5-shot pistol shooting. go to Programme for details. 16 Oct 05Inter Regional 10m Championships, WolverhamptonThe event was open for men and women, in rifle and pistol shooting pair and individual. In male pistol and rifle, we entered two pairs, each and one pistol individual. We had a female pistol pair, but could not find any female rifle shooters. Our teams all finished third, but unfortunately there were no 'bronze' medals. The pistol and rifle second teams finished 9th and 7th respectively. It was an enjoyable shoot for all and our thanks go to Geof McHugh, the organiser and the NSRA (esp. Tony Taylor at NISC) and Eley for their support. For full results click here |
