unique form of firing that is increasingly popular with studio potters internationally. The synthesis of fly ash from the wood and the introduction of salt into the firing chamber at 1260 degrees centigrade produces surfaces of great depth and subtlety. Continuous stoking of wood into the fireboxes effectively connects the potter with the making and firing process, the movement of the flamepath within the kiln often being evident on the finished work.
This group aims to expand public awareness of this creative firing technique through exhibitions and workshops.

Funded by the Crafts Council of Ireland, the kiln is sited at their training facility in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. The kiln has a capacity of 50 cubic feet and takes up to 20 hours to fire. In this time, one cord of wood is burned and it is 48 hours after the last stoke before the kiln is cool enough to be opened.

This is a highly unpredictable process, with an enormous amount of variables, from the way
the kiln is packed, to the timber, the addition of salt and the stoker. The result;
serendipity.
