25/04/02 Freebutt Brighton-

  • 50 CALIBRE

Londons beatdown thughs decend on brighton and they sound fucking awesome and unlike some bands the keep the brutality up through the whole set, it was sort of like having HATEBREED in your living room- and may i say not one casualty yet...

  • WALL OF DENIAL

The guys are making a name for themselves coing across as a cross between IRON MONKEY and BOTCH (courtesy of John's rather extravagent guitar parts) but tonight, while promoting there new e.p "burn the sky" they simply arent on fire like usual- not dissapointing but a bit of a 3 star night... .

  • UNDERULE

hmmm looks like someone went hey lets get a beatdown crew and force a death guitarist to play in it and it sounds..................................... well...... brutally amazing - one of the freshest sounding decidedly exciting UK bands i have seen it really was something the same but very different. and with 50C in the pit with some london style dance moves (most of the brighton guys looked shocked and bemused ) i have been taking beatdown classes from londons branch of th B6K so im well covered- and the bouncer looked like he was ready to step in ever beat.... and he got his chance when the prick who had had a bottle of vodka before wandering aimlessly in to the pit... i head the crunch of his skull as it hit the bar.... nasty..

    Household Name Xmas Party

    15th December @ The Underworld -

    • LIGHTYEAR

Opening with a song from the Lightyear side project 'cottonweary' i was dubious if Lightyear would rock like they did in Brighton... Ok I was surprised when BLAM I was hit full force by their cheeky brand of super happy pop-ska-punk had even a smile on my face. tonnes of energy and charisma from the party machine-come-singer Chas. Lightyear are the ONLY band who can make dancing with a brass section look hardcore.... :-0 and what the hell was with the Morris dancing stick session? I give in. great show though.

    • BIG D AND THE KIDS TABLE

I heard these guys were pretty lame I was wrong the dirty little punk/ska/rock band from the states really rocked the joint. they were funny if not a *little* generic like so many Fat Wreak bands [they of course are not but do sound like one] thumbs up.

    • CAPDOWN

I don't know what to say abut these shell shocked ska/hardcore/dub kids- Obv they rule this has to be the coolest set I have seen since the freebutt show with against all authority more core than ska I was surprised to find myself standing at the front of the stage. these are a great great band- and pound for sound is growing on me.

    • FIVE KNUCKLE

Slightly bizarre Ska'd core band having played with them on Friday night [they played a hardcore set] it was a shock to hear them playing a more ska orientated songs ok it was good, I think they are better at the core than the ska but by no means are these a bad band. talented to boot.

    • LEFTOVER CRACK

Dirty motorhead meets rancid ska from 'tha Lowa east cyde [TM]' not to everyone's taste. this band smell bad and play worse, but I liked that.

    • THE ARRIVALS

Rocking melodic hardcore from Chicago- played a faultless if drunk (?) set they caught my attention, check em out.

    • THE FOAMERS

I wont lie, I was at the bar.

    • CAESER SOZE

Tokyo's finest Ska band are splitting up noooooooooo!!!! Buy thier cd now and beg them to stay together! if they don't make you smile, check your pulse, there is a good chance you are dead.

      Scene Reviews-

    • TWOFOLD

The popularity of this band grows and grows their unique mix of hardcore and emo forms complex and floating melodies riddled with aggression angst and every emotion in between, the addition of Lindsey (ex lucky 13) has allowed the overdubs on cd to be played live without losing power or momentum. one of the few bands with a singer drummer that actually pulls it off, there downfall is there often emotionless live show which could be a little more spontaneous. check out there split with the gas drummers, but watch this space for a new CD that has their strongest material yet.

    • TWENTY SECOND RIOT

Guilford's youth upstarts throw genre's out of the window the very young group show both maturity of sound and immaturity of lyrics think blink 182 jamming with sick of it all with some token comic power violence aKa Spazz not suffering from stage fright the -in yer face frontman crawls and jumps his way through the set.enjoyable.

    • STEIGAL

Strange band across between will haven vision of disorder and at the drive in. purposeful and often chaotic I was well impressed - England should have more genre crashing bands like this- nice to see a female guitarist as well. and they truly bring an element of chaotic danger to there live shows.

    • THE PIRATES

Sleazy as fuck this band of relatively young guys are half fashion project half sweaty punk rawk - they can go from being a bunch of hooligans to the saviours of punk rock in the same set. the only way to describe them is a straight up punk band. raw and uncompromising with only a hint of melody.

      The Star- Guildford 2nd Feb

Firstly OVER21s BOOOOOOOOOO! I cant believe my eyes when my friends get turned away, what can I say I was disappointed Ellis looked mad too and pretty much everyone was shocked at this stupid, stupid rule! but fuck that on to the bands!

    • STEGEL

I'll say it b4 and I'll say it again BOOOM! Stegel are defiantly in the house Bry was complaining of his throat being sore.. I barely noticed they ripped through a slightly short set but they are becoming one of my fave bands to watch, daz has all the moves! I brought a cd ! so should you! www.stegel.com

    • FIG 4.0

would these cheeky northern types live you to the hype Danny twofold has pressed in to me? why yes ! I was thinking how good can a band be? the answer is very. its those ickle blastbeats and roar alongs that hooked me.. www.figurefour.co.uk .

    • MONTANA PETE

I'll confess first few songs and I was wandering to the bar, then suddenly my attention gets hooked by these weird hooky - dare I say arty riffs beats and vocals I enjoyed - friend brought black discs the end .

    • SUNFACTOR

how heavy should an emo band be? if sun factor have their way very I need say no more about the luxuriously bowel churning riffs layered with close to perfect vocals.. ladies please don't fight...enough sunfactor to go round but dont get burnt etc... etc........

The parkingsons - vs - The Eighties matchbox b-line disaster

    12th March @ The Concorde 2 -

    • The parkingsons

When the parkingson's came on I swear the singer was out of sham 69 the bassist was out of the clash and the guitarist went to the Mick Jones school of 70's Pogo guitar skills and the drummer (complete with leather gloves) wouldn't have looked out of place on the modern Motley crue line up. so raise you beer glasses Spit and pogo like a loon (as many were) leather jackets rule ok. every song started (and ended) with 1.2.3.4 which is ace. and songs like "I don't know what's right anymore" were catchy as hell! not what I expected at all. 3 chord 70's punk done very very well.

    • The Eighties matchbox b-line disaster

they look cool they sound cool they even have a cool name they don't sound like the strokes.. not at all.. they sound like iggy (in the passenger) pop playing the doors but punked up to the max it was really dirty sleazy and high energy. guy (vox) entering the crowd and climbing up anything he could. and man it was loud. did I say dirty??
