Philips MA30

The Carmarthen Western Bypass (part of the A40) opened in 1983, including the new Lesneven Bridge which replaced the temporary Bailey Bridge. New lighting was installed throughout the bypass, with these SON-E Philips MA30s on the main road and SOX Mk1 Philips MA50s on spurs from the two roundabouts either side of the bridge.

Twenty years later, all the MA30s are gone, a mass replacement having been done in April 2003. This photograph was taken on the day of the replacement, and these lanterns at the Western roundabout were gone within 12 hours - I took the photo while technicians were replacing the lanterns over the bridge! A few MA30s survived a couple of weeks longer before being replaced - maybe the engineers ran out of time, or ZX3s...

Lesneven Bridge is so called because Carmarthen is twinned with the town of Lesneven in France.

The same two columns as in the above photo, with the new lanterns. The replacements are Urbis ZX3 SON-T flat glass lanterns.

Philips MA30

A close up of one of the MA30 lanterns. Although these have now disappeared from Carmarthen, examples can still be seen in Llanelli town centre.
