Station Road

Before Lesneven Bridge was built, the temporary Bailey Bridge over the River Towy was at the end of Station Road. When Lesneven Bridge opened, the Bailey Bridge was demolished, leaving Station Road a dead end.

Station Road is lit mainly by GEC Z9454 lanterns. This photo shows a Revo Lucidor 90W SOX lantern outside Carmarthen Station, although it is slightly different to those in Crosshands. This is the older style Lucidor - the newer version, as seen in Crosshands, features a larger side entry shoe instead of the smaller mounting shown in the top here. The lantern was redesigned when it was discovered that it wouldn't fit onto some side-entry brackets due to the slight curvature of the bracket. (Thanks to Simon Cornwell for this information)

Old lantern on concrete column

This concrete column and (SOX?) lantern hang over the railway line, although they are not actually on land owned by the station, but private land under the bridge. I don't know what type of lantern this is, or what it was originally supposed to light, but it is the only one around. It appears to be fitted with an unusual winch mechanism to lower the lantern to the ground for repairs. As there is no main road here, and as far as I know never has been, I can only assume this light was used to aid railway workers, perhaps loading or unloading freight trains.

The lantern no longer works - I checked 16th September 2003. I imagine it hasn't worked for some time.

Update, April 2004: Does anyone else think this looks like a top entry version of the Wardle Atholl lantern, as seen in Mumbles?

Here is the lantern from the opposite direction, this time looking from the station.

Since photographing this one, I have discovered another identical installation outside an industrial area in Whitland (pointed out by Chris Gale - cheers, Chris!).
