Crosshands

This photo of the A476 southbound was taken at the old crossroads in the centre of the village. Here you can see a mixture of old and new SOX lighting. The newer Philips MA90s seem to be alternating with the older fittings so it seems they were installed at a later date to narrow the gap between lights.

I believe the Revo 'Dalek' lanterns on telegraph pole brackets were the original fitting here (as shown second right). These are identical to those installed at Pembrey and Burry Port.

In the foreground is a rare column fitting - most lanterns are installed on telegraph pole brackets. I don't know what this lantern is - it could be an old GEC.

Update : the lantern and column in the foreground were replaced sometime before 19th November 2003 with a Philips MA90 SOX with integral gear, on new metal column.

Revo Lucidor

Entering Crosshands on the old road (the main A48 before the new dual carrigeway bypass was built) from the Carmarthen end, one of the first lanterns you see is this 90W Revo Lucidor. I assume this is an original installation, possibly fitted at a later date to the Revo 'Dalek' lanterns on telegraph pole brackets which light the A476 road. Very few Lucidors are left on this road, most having been replaced by a mixture of MA90, Eleco GR100 and GEC Z9454 lanterns.

Revo Lucidor

More Lucidor lanterns - but these are not actually on a road at all, but at a car park behind a shop off the old Carmarthen road. They appear to be fitted to old telegraph poles which no longer carry any wires, suggesting this is a disused road. I would imagine these are no longer working.

I don't know what road this originally was, but I assume that when the bypass was opened in the early 1980s, that this road became obsolete.

Revo lantern in Crosshands

A Revo 'Dalek' lantern on rusty bracket, still in use on the A476, north of the large A48/A476 roundabout. This is identical to several lanterns south of the roundabout (see first photo), which seems to support my theory that this was part of the original Crosshands lighting installation along the A476.

There are no more of these lanterns remaining north of the roundabout, with all the other telegraph brackets carrying a mixture of MA90, GR100 and Z9454 lanterns.

top entry lantern

A side road in Crosshands, with two unusual and elderly looking brackets now fitted with Philips MI50 35W SOX lanterns. These were probably originally installed with GLS or mercury vapour lanterns.

Crosshands

Above a pedestrian crossing, SOX lighting has been changed to SON. There are two of these Philips SGS203 lanterns here, which probably replaced Revo 'Daleks' to improve visibility for pedestrians at some point.

Davis GR100

These two GR100s are on the A476 heading north towards Llandeilo. The one in the foreground has the newer bowl, the one behind it has the larger, older bowl. Both have the newer GRP canopy. These are replacements - originally these brackets would have been fitted with either REVO Daleks or GEC Z9454s.

Z9554M

A GEC Z9554M lantern, originally installed in the 1980s as part of the road modification scheme when the A48 dual carriageway was built through Crosshands. GEC lanterns were used throughout the scheme, with the larger Z9654 180W SOX version lighting the roundabout at Crosshands.

Philips MA90

Two dayburning Philips MA90 lanterns in Crosshands Business Park. These are the older style design with the larger shoe. These MA90s are the original lantern here, used when the Business Park was built in the late 1970s or early 1980s - one of the earliest uses of MA90s in the area. Modern replacements mean that you can now see all the versions of this lantern here - less gear with the smaller modern shoe, and the larger version with the gear inside the canopy.

Crosshands

High pressure sodium lanterns are used to light the car park at the local supermarket. This AEC Lunoide (thanks to Mike Barford for identification) is probably a replacement - I believe WRTL MRL6s were originally used.

This Urbis Sapphire SON lantern was also photographed at the above car park.

WRTL MRL6

A dirty MRL6, one of the few remaining from the original installation, which can only be 10 - 15 years ago. Incidentally, two were replaced with MA90s during 2003 or 2005 - one of the only SON to SOX replacements I'm aware of!

REVO Baby Dalek

A REVO "Baby Dalek" C13721/S - the smaller version of the lantern in the fourth photo on this page - was spotted just outside Crosshands.

GEC

A "baby Nightwatch"! This is the smaller 35W version of the popular Nightwatch design, introduced by GEC and now made by WRTL / Siemens. For some reason, this smaller design was discontinued despite the larger design being carried on.

GEC

These dayburning GEC Z9564s were photographed at the main A48 roundabout in Crosshands. These lanterns are group switched and were being tested at the time of photography.
