GEC Z9554 in Llandeilo

This photo shows a typical main road lighting in Llandeilo, a GEC Z9554 lantern on a steel column. These were probably installed in the 1970's, when the road through the town formed part of the A40.

GEC Z9545 cut-off lantern

At some stage, it was decided to employ a single full cut-off lantern on the edge of main road SOX installations. In most cases, the GEC Z9545 lantern was used. This example is at the Carmarthen end of Llandeilo.

GEC Z9545 cut-off lanterns can also be seen entering Abergwili, Drefach and several other places in the south-west Wales area.

Thorn lantern in Llandeilo

A Thorn Alpha 9 90W SOX deep bowl lantern attached to a building with a bracket. This is on the main road into Llandeilo and is a lone bracket fitting among the GEC 135W lanterns featured above.

GEC lanterns in Llandeilo

The main road through Llandeilo. Here you can see more examples of the GEC lanterns. The Alpha 9 featured above is on the corner of the white building to the right of the picture, where the road bends round to the right.

concrete column in Llandeilo

A concrete column fitted with post-top lantern on a residential street in Llandeilo. The lantern is a Phosco P107/24 SEVERN (thanks to Tim Luck and Steven Oliver for identification). Steven Oliver has identified this as being MBF, which probably means this road is a candidate for lighting replacements shortly!

The P107 is still being made by CU Phosco and can be used with various lamps including 50 - 100W SON and 35W SOX.

post-top lantern

This concrete column has been fitted with a metal sleeve and Phosco P107/12/5 SEVERN SOX lantern at some point (again thanks to Tim Luck for identification). The metal sleeve suggests the original lantern fitting wasn't a post-top.

post-top lantern on concrete column

This concrete column is similar to that shown in the top photo on this page, with a Phosco P107/12/5 SEVERN SOX lantern as shown in the above photo. The lack of metal sleeve suggests that this has always been a post-top fitting.

Another concrete column, this time with a Phosco P107/24 SEVERN lantern - the same as in the top photo, but with an opaque bowl.

Hyperion

This Relite Hyperion 180W SOX lantern was spotted on the A40 heading out of Llandeilo towards Rhosmaen. There are two of these together on higher columns in the middle an installation of GEC Z9554 135W SOX lanterns, and both run 180W SOX lamps. The reason for the exta power is unclear, although there is a minor junction here which could have been more important at the time of installation.

These are the only two 180W Hyperions I have seen in the area, although the shorter 135W version is still relatively common.

Davis GR100

A Davis GR100 shallow bowl on an old rusty column along the same stretch of road. This is the sole 90W SOX among the installation of 135W SOX, and the column was probably put up at a different time to the others. The Davis GR100 is almost certainly a replacement, but I've no idea what was originally installed here.

Urbis ZX1

A brand new Urbis ZX1 stands on a new NEDAL aluminium column, photographed in an industrial park outside Llandeilo.

GEC

I believe this to be a GEC Z8691 - this is located on the same industrial park as the ZX1 above, but is within a factory compound.

GEC Z8896

This GEC Z8896 was photographed on another factory compound on the same estate.
