Manordeilo

This old fitting was spotted in Manordeilo, a village just east of Llandeilo on the A40. There are two similar fittings either side of the road, but with different lanterns.

It is very rare to see this type of lantern in the area, as most of these were replaced by SOX lanterns in the 1980s and 1990s. I have no idea if these lanterns still work, but judging by the 'Street Lighting Fault hotline' plaque underneath the fitting, I would imagine they are supposed to!

The cream box looks like some sort of modern photocell attachment. The lantern is a Thorn Beta 4 (thanks to Jon Salmon for spotting that) either an open version or without it's refractor dome.

This is the lantern the other side of the road. I would think that this type of lantern is the original fitting and the one in the above photograph is a replacement, as this looks to be slightly older. The lantern is a GEC Wembley, probably dating from the 1950's, without it's bowl (thanks to Jon Salmon for identification).

If you look closely you can see the timeswitch still attached to the base of the telegraph pole. I didn't notice the timeswitch until I got the photo back, otherwise I would have taken a close-up picture!

This light carries no photocell attachment nor fault hotline plaque so I would imagine it no longer works.
