Thorn Alpha 8

Nantgaredig is a village on the A40 between Llandeilo and Carmarthen. The village also spreads along the B4310.

This photo shows the main street lighting installation through Nantgaredig on the A40. These Thorn Alpha 8 lanterns on metal columns date from the 1980s, and are a very rare example of a 1980s non-LPS installation in this area. An identical installation on the A40 through the neighbouring village of Pontargothi dates from the same time.

This photo shows another column in Nantgaredig. This time the Alpha 8 has no bowl.

Thorn Beta 1

This Thorn Beta 1 was spotted just off the A40, along the B4310 (North) road to Brechfa. Of course, had I travelled North along this road when I last visited Nantgaredig in June 2003, I would have seen this nine months ago!

I hadn't seen a Beta 1 in the area for years until I spotted one in Lampeter last month - now two come along at once...

Thorn Beta 1

A photo of the Beta 1 as seen from the road. 20 years ago, this was a relatively common sight! There used to be a few lighting the A485 between Peniel and Rhydargaeau.

It's nice to see one still remaining along a 'B' road - how long it will last is uncertain, although it does have the 'lighting fault line' number underneath it so it could be around for a while.

Thorn Beta 1

Looking closely at the Beta 1, I couldn't see evidence of any contol gear, so it could be running a GLS lamp (like the one in Lampeter). I couldn't get close enough to tell by the shape of the lamp itself.

I also couldn't see a photocell - or a timeswitch! Maybe it's on the back of the pole (as with the MA90 above).
